Dust on the Ground || Kate & Laura

howlinglaurahale:

The Hales weren’t exactly well known for controlling their tempers. Even Talia, who had been one of the most level headed in their pack (and rightly so, she was their alpha for so long) tended to lose her patience and snap occasionally. Laura had learned to control hers somewhat over the years, she was the oldest of the pack and had to take care of her siblings after the fire, and she quickly found that she had to have a lot of self control and patience with that. That, paired with the alpha status that she had following her mother’s death, meant that she’d trained her way to having a certain level of control over herself. But she wasn’t a saint, she was a human being, a human being that was born a werewolf, and she could only stand by for so long when she was taunted and baited by the one person that could always stir something in her. What was worse was that she let it happen, she let herself be effected by the woman, but it had always been that way, and even after years of staying away from her, the pull was still there.

Laura hadn’t bothered to take on her wolf form when she tracked her. She knew Kate’s scent well, the burn in her nostrils that caused a haze in her mind, took her years into the past before fires and guns and deaths. But she didn’t let it cloud her mind, and she’d pressed on, running through the woods until she found the huntress. She was angry, the rage was coursing through her, fueled on by the moon bathing the clearing in a pale light. Her eyes flashed red as she stepped out, and she growled at Kate, holding herself back from leaping on her then and there. “You just don’t know when to quit, do you?” She spat, eyeing the weapon in the woman’s hand. “I told you not to bother with those, but you were never very good at going by the rules, were you?” Laura glanced at the targets, then back at Kate, before stepping out further. She wasn’t stupid enough to leave herself too vulnerable, not enough to be shot by whatever wolfsbane or silver tainted the weapon. “I told you not to test me, Kate. Did you think that I wasn’t serious? Some of us around here know how to keep our word.”

Being face to face with Laura wasn’t as easy as Kate was making it seem, she actually felt like she was going to suffocate. She was filled with so many emotions at once, she didn’t know what the hell was going on anymore. Seeing Laura so upset was both a turn on, and upsetting because she knew she was the underlying cause of it. Sure she had provoked her, it came natural to the huntress. But that didn’t mean she felt any less bad about what she had done in the past, and she knew she couldn’t fix it. Laura had been her best friend for years, even before she got with Derek. There had always been some underlying tension there, both good and bad. It started getting bad when Kate began to spend more time with Laura’s brother, and she knew that Laura didn’t like it. But now, it seemed bad tension had drowned out any other underlying tension there had been between the wolf and the huntress.

Forcing back her thoughts, Kate chuckled softly and spun the pistol around her finger by the trigger guard. “What’s the fun in following the rules? They are meant to be broken, y'know.” she pointed out, her tone smooth and velvety, laced with a fake innocence that bordered teasing. “Oh sweetie, I knew you were serious, that’s what makes it so fun. Of all people, you should know better than to think I’m not going to push your buttons. It’s too entertaining, always has been.” she cooed coolly, keeping her calm demeanor.
